Ahlstrom has expanded production of its Ahlstrom ECO filtration media to Europe, launching manufacturing at its Turin plant to support growing demand for more sustainable automotive filtration solutions.

The technology, previously produced in Brazil, uses lignin — a renewable by-product of the pulp industry — to replace around 30% of fossil-based phenolic resin. This reduces reliance on non-renewable materials while maintaining performance in engine air, oil and fuel filtration applications.

The solution is designed to be compatible with existing filter manufacturing processes and also helps reduce formaldehyde emissions during curing by 40–70%, supporting stricter environmental requirements.

“With Ahlstrom ECO, we are demonstrating that sustainability and performance can go hand in hand,” said Stéphanie Pigeot-Rémy, Head of Global R&D and Product Development, Filtration at Ahlstrom.
