A fossil-free paper mill has always been a dream for Iggesund and has meant huge investments for a long period of time: “Our new back boiler, operational since spring 2012” explains Olov Winblad von Walter, Director of the paper mill, “is giving us increasingly good results: our production of paper pulp has gone up with a resulting increase in energy production.”
The Iggesund plant is one of the world’s integrated paper mills with the highest level of investments: as of today, the back boiler has been the largest investment made by the paper mill for a total cost of 250 million euros. Thanks to the boiler, there will be a gradual increase in the yearly production of paper pulp from 350,000 to 420,000 tons.
And there will also be environmental benefits: particulate emissions, that were already quite low, have now been halved, whereas sulphur emissions, contributing to the acidification of the surrounding land and already very low, have been reduced by more than 80%.
