“With a solid regulatory framework at EU level, biomethane can ensure immediate reductions in CO2 emissions, strengthen energy independence, and accelerate the transition toward carbon neutrality for European industry and society,” stated the EU industries that signed the Joint Declaration on Biomethane presented in Brussels to EU leaders.

“Biomethane represents a concrete and readily available lever to strengthen the energy competitiveness of the Italian and European paper industry and to accelerate the sector’s decarbonization pathway,” said Assocarta President Lorenzo Poli, alongside the appeal.

The declaration outlines ten priority actions to accelerate the deployment of biomethane, including:

  • Recognizing the role of biomethane in achieving EU climate and energy targets, such as the 35 bcm production target by 2030 included in REPowerEU.
  • Removing administrative barriers to certification, trade, and corporate purchase agreements.
  • Supporting economies of scale through incentives, financing mechanisms, and long-term purchase agreements, with priority given to energy-intensive sectors that are difficult to decarbonize.
  • Harmonizing national support schemes to facilitate cross-border development.
  • Improving access to infrastructure through integrated network planning and simplified authorization procedures.
