Fedrigoni Group accelerates decarbonisation: strategic biomethane agreement for Italian plants

Fedrigoni Group has signed one of the first long-term biomethane supply agreements in Italy, covering approximately 40% of the gas needs of its production plants in the country.

The initiative strengthens the Group’s energy resilience, diversifies supply sources, and enables an estimated 30% to 50% reduction in the cradle-to-gate carbon footprint of products manufactured at the sites involved.

Operating in a hard-to-abate sector such as the paper industry—where electrification is complex and some process emissions are unavoidable—Fedrigoni identifies biomethane as a key lever for decarbonisation.

The renewable gas, distributed through the national grid and certified via Guarantees of Origin and Proof of Sustainability in accordance with RED II/III criteria, gradually replaces fossil natural gas. This also reduces dependence on imports and exposure to geopolitical volatility.

The agreement, carried out with Verdalia Bioenergy, CH1, Fri-El and Bio.Methane.Hub, represents one of the first biomethane PPA contracts in the Italian paper sector.

Already implemented at sites such as Varone (Trentino), the project is part of Fedrigoni’s ESG strategy “Making Progress”, which integrates emissions reduction, circular economy, and responsible sourcing.

According to the Group, decarbonisation and competitiveness are complementary processes in the energy transition.
