The 4 directives of the package on circular economy, which were approved on 18 April by the European Parliament in Strasbourg, were published in the Official Journal of the European Union on 14 June 2018. The directives should be transposed by the Member States by 5 July 2020. The main objectives of the directives lay down the following points: recycling by 2025 for at least 55% of urban waste (60% by 2030 and 65% by 2035); restriction for landfill (up to a maximum of 10% by 2035); 65% of packaging must be recycled by 2025 and 70% by 2030; household textiles and hazardous waste (like paints, pesticides, oils and solvents) must be collected separately from 2025; compulsory collection of biodegradable waste separately from 2025 or else it must be recycled at home through composting. In addition, the EU package limits the quota of urban waste being sent to landfill to a maximum of 10% by 2035.
