Hamburger Containerboard Dunaújváros, part of the Prinzhorn Group, has launched a series of modernization projects for its energy plant in collaboration with Valmet, as part of a long-term partnership.

The Hungarian mill, which produces around 700,000 tons of recycled containerboard annually, operates a power plant using a circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler to cover the site’s energy needs and utilize production by-products.

In recent years, Valmet has implemented several upgrades, including additive feeding systems and solutions aimed at improving operational efficiency and plant availability. Further upgrades are planned for 2026, including automated cleaning systems for heat-transfer surfaces and boiler modifications to adapt to a more sustainable fuel mix.

The company also aims to reduce CO₂ emissions by at least 50% by 2030, gradually lowering coal usage from 20% to 15% while improving production efficiency.

According to both companies, the collaboration is designed to enhance reliability, environmental performance, and profitability, in line with the European paper industry’s transition toward energy efficiency and circular economy goals.
