Spanish retail chain Alvaro Moreno has partnered with UK-based paper and packaging company Mondi and Spanish packaging converter Innovaciones Subbética to switch from plastic to paper bags.

Mondi has developed three sustainable alternatives for Alvaro Moreno’s shopping, online delivery and gift bags.

The bags will be made from Mondi’s Advantage and EcoVantage product ranges, which are made from renewable and responsibly sourced materials

Mondi’s latest paper range, EcoVantage, is developed from fresh pulp and recycled fibres.

«Our EcoVantage paper» in the words of Paulus Goess, Mondi speciality kraft paper sales director «supports Alvaro Moreno’s sustainability aims, thanks to its recycled content and recyclability, and the bags are strong and appealing for customers who are looking for the best shopping experience, both online and in-store».

Before adopting the paper bags, Alvaro Moreno used more than 3.7 million plastic bags and containers a year.

The shift to paper bags has allowed the retail chain to reduce its plastic consumption by almost 90 tons a year.

«The Mondi papers», according to Alvaro Moreno, founder and namesake of the chain have helped us reduce our environmental footprint. As a “company with soul”, we want to meet our consumers’ sustainability goals, and since introducing this new packaging range, we have had excellent customer feedback».

Last month, Mondi partnered with Tesco Central Europe on a recycled shopping bag initiative. In the partnership, Mondi used corrugated waste from Tesco’s warehouses to produce its EcoVantage paper.

The paper was produced at Mondi’s mill in the Czech Republic and used for making Tesco shopping bags.
