Pro Carton, the European Association of Carton and Cartonboard Manufacturers, has announced the appointment of Andreas Birmoser, Executive Vice President Cartonboard at Stora Enso, as its new President.
Birmoser succeeds Michele Bianchi, CEO of RDM Group, who has served as President over the past four years. This period has been marked by significant structural change within the association, including the integration of another industry organization and the evolution of Pro Carton into a fully comprehensive industry body. These developments took place as the sector prepared for the introduction of the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR).
With more than 20 years of experience in the forestry and cartonboard industry, Birmoser brings extensive international leadership in strategy, business development, and operational management. In his current role at Stora Enso, he is responsible for the company’s global cartonboard business. Throughout his career, he has held senior leadership positions across Europe and South America, including CEO of Veracel Celulose, playing a key role in corporate transformation and sustainable growth initiatives.
Commenting on his appointment, Birmoser emphasized the importance of collaboration across the industry: “In a time of economic uncertainty, regulatory change, and shifting market expectations, no company can succeed alone. Pro Carton plays a vital role in bringing the industry together, strengthening our collective voice, and ensuring we remain a trusted partner for policymakers and stakeholders across Europe.”
Horst Bittermann, Director General of Pro Carton, welcomed the appointment, noting that Birmoser’s deep understanding of both the association and the sector’s challenges and opportunities makes him well placed to lead the organization into its next phase of development. This phase will focus on strengthening the sector’s voice, supporting members, and promoting the value of fibre-based packaging across Europe.
As President, Birmoser will work closely with the Pro Carton Board to further strengthen collaboration across the value chain. The organization will continue to promote fibre-based packaging and ensure that Pro Carton remains a leading voice in shaping science- and evidence-based policy in support of sustainability and competitiveness.
Pro Carton also expressed its gratitude to outgoing President Michele Bianchi for his leadership, commitment, and strategic vision over the past four years, which contributed significantly to the growth and consolidation of the association.
