The European Commission is working on its proposals to review the legislation on greenhouse gas emissions, energy efficiency and renewable energy sources. Compared to 1990 levels, the goal of the «2030 Climate and Energy» package is to reduce GHG by 40%, whereby this objective should be reached by cutting energy demand by 27% and increasing the share of renewables in gross final consumption by 27%.
If the goals related to the share of renewables and energy efficiency are increased to 30%, emissions could be cut up to 44% by 2030, with a possible reduction of about 50% if higher energy efficiency goals are set. The attainment of a 40% energy efficiency objective combined with a 33% increase in the use of renewable energy sources can lead to a 51% reduction in emissions.
