The EU Commission adopted its communication entitled «Stepping up EU Action to Protect and Restore the World’s Forests», which aims at protecting and improving the health of existing forests, in particular primary forests, and significantly expanding the world forest area in the name of sustainability and biodiversity.

The communication has a twofold objective: on the one hand, it aims at protecting and improving the health of existing forests, in particular primary forests; on the other hand, it aims at significantly expanding the world forest area in the name of sustainability and biodiversity.

By 2024 the uncontaminated rainforests in their original condition will disappear from the Ivory Coast; by 2040 they will not be present in Madagascar, Angola and India, if the current deforestation and forest degradation trends are maintained. Source: a new map of the Joint Research Centre (JRC).
