UPM, Michelman and Bobst have developed two new paper-based packaging concepts designed to help brands comply with EU regulations, including the Single-Use Plastics Directive (SUPD).

The collaboration combines packaging papers, bio-based coatings, and application expertise to deliver ready-to-use solutions with strong barrier performance, heat sealability, and compatibility with existing industrial packaging lines.

The two concepts address different food applications: the first targets products such as tea and snacks with standard barrier requirements, while the second is designed for higher oxygen-barrier needs, such as biscuits and chocolate, improving material efficiency and performance.

The goal of the project is to accelerate the adoption of sustainable packaging while maintaining performance equivalent to conventional solutions and ensuring recyclability and, in selected cases, compostability.
